Daniel Chapter 3:

Verses 1-7 Read Aloud

THE IMAGE OR STATUE OF GOLD:
In time to come, King Nebuchadnezzar made an IMAGE/ STATUE OF GOLD. It was very huge. Very huge. It was 60 cubits high and 6 cubits wide. (Later we will learn what those numbers mean. E.g. 6 is the number of man because man & BEAST were made by God on the 6 th day.)
The Image or great statue was made of pure gold the most precious metal on earth. This Image or
statue didn’t only have the head of Gold, as in the dream… but the whole statue was made of the gold
that he possessed. All the wealth, the gold in the land belonged to the king. He was very rich. So he had
this image of Gold made. He built an image of complete gold to show that his kingdom would last
forever. It was opposite to God’s prophecy; he built an image completely of pure gold.
King Nebuchadnezzar had many lands and nations and many provinces under his leadership and rule.
Yet, now he also wanted to make himself the greatest religious leader. He called all the kingdom leaders
for an act of worship, forcing all the nations to worship his god and so renew their allegiance or loyalty
to him. He makes a full image of Gold from head to toes to show his kingdom will last forever. He wanted to show his great power and be worshipped.

THE DEDICATION
So one day the king commanded all the most prominent rulers of his kingdom… all the princes, all the governors, all the captains, all the judges, all the treasurers, councillors and all the sheriffs to come to the dedication of the Golden Image.
A dedication is a special time set aside to mark the beginning of a certain event that of honouring God, or a king. There, in the plain of Dura, it was not to get together to discuss war techniques, or how to manage the affairs in the various lands but to worship.
It was a religious gathering that these heads of state were called together for. It was to worship and honour for the first time the golden Image… The man-made Image of Gold which Nebuchadnezzar made. Made by human hands… it was an idol.

THE DECREE… FALL DOWN AND WORSHIP
At the Dedication, WHEN ALL THESE HEADS OF STATE WERE GATHERED and STOOD before the Golden Statue… (THERE MUST HAVE BEEN HUNDREDSS OF THEM IN THE KINGDOM OF BABYLON),
A herald cried out.
A Herald is a messenger or one bringing important news or to make an announcement of a coming event. He cried aloud!
This news WAS A LAW to obey…..to all the people, nations and languages that:
Whatever time you hear the sound of all kinds of music, you are commanded to fall down and worship the Golden Image. Fall down, & amp; worship… was the Law.
Onto their knees or faces, all the officials and the nations had to go.

THE PERSECUTION:
The Herald, bringer of the news of the king’s Law, also said:
All who do not fall down and worship … shall that same hour be cast into a burning fiery furnace.
FEAR OF DEATH; FORCED TO FALL DOWN.
So when all the people heard the great orchestra playing all kinds of music, they all fell down and
worshipped The Golden Image.
Thus the people were forced to fall down and worship for fear of the king’s death threat. Nobody
wanted to die.

Verses 8-30: Read Aloud

THE DAY OF THE THREE HEBREW BOYS’ TRIAL BY FIRE:
THE HEBREWS ACCUSED:

Now certain of the Chaldeans or astrologers, who were watching the worship service and who did or
did not worship the golden image, went to the king and accused the Hebrews.
They said to the King,” O. King, certain of the Jews whom you have set over the affairs of Babylon, do
not honour you or worship your god or the Golden image that you have set up. The king was very angry
and commanded that they be brought to him.

GIVEN ANOTHER CHANCE TO OBEY THE KING’S LAW
When the 3 young men were brought in before the king, he asked them,
Is it true, he said to them, that you do not worship my gods nor worship the Golden Image I have set
up? The kings wanted them to compromise or yield to his persuasion, and thereby see if he could change their minds.
We know that king Nebuchadnezzar had given the three young men important positions in the
kingdom. So, it could have been that the king then wanted to give them another chance to obey the
decree or law.
He said, ”At the set time you hear the orchestra with all kinds of music starting to play, you should fall
down and worship the Image I have made”.
“But if you do not fall down and worship, you shall be cast into the middle of the burning fiery furnace”.
“AND WHO IS THAT GOD THAT WILL DELIVER YOU OUT OF MY HANDS?”
THE KING WANTED THEM TO KNOW THAT HE… THE KING WAS IN CONTROL HERE & NOT YOUR GOD OR ANY OTHER GOD.
WHAT THE THREE FRIENDS ANSWERED THE KING
The three young men answered the king respectfully and said,” We are not trying to be rebellious, o
King; OUR GOD IS ABLE TO DELIVER US.
BUT EVEN IF HE DOES NOT DELIVER US, WE STILL NOT BOW DOWN!”

These men had courage to say that they had faith in God to deliver them, and even if He did not… they
would rather perish, but they would not bow down. They also knew to bow down to an idol, a false
god, is to forsake Him…, who is able to save them. They were not looking for an easy outcome.
They showed NO FEAR, and boldly made their stand not to bow down before Nebuchadnezzar’s
Golden Image.
Then Nebuchadnezzar was very angry, and his face even showed how very angry he was. His face
changed so much; he must have looked like an animal.

7 TIMES HOTTER
He gave orders that the furnace be made 7 times hotter than before. On that day with many top
councillors and prominent officers coming to see their execution, the 3 friends were BOUND with all
their clothes on… their hats, coats and shoes, and marched to the furnace and hastily pushed with
spears off into the middle of the fire.
The strongest of the army guards, who took the bound friends, could not stand the heat of the fire as
they approached the furnace and died while casting them into the fire.
IT WAS BABYLONIANS THAT PERISHED BY THE FIRE AND NOT THE HEBREW MEN.
THE DELIVERANCE: PASSING THE TEST.
Then right before the king’s eyes, the unbelievable took place. The king saw a strange sight. He called
his councillors and asked them, “Didn’t I have thrown three men bound into the fire? I SEE 4 FOUR MEN WALKING LOOSE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIRE and THE OTHER IS LIKE THE SON OF GOD”.
Who do you think was the fourth man in the fiery furnace?
The king went to the entry of the furnace and called to the friends that they should come forth. They
found that not even a hair on their head had been burnt, nor their clothes or not even the smell of fire
was on them.
The king was shocked and spoke in the presence of all the governors and heads of state, and blessed the
God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who had sent his Angel to deliver them, who trusted in Him
and even changed the king’s word so that they might not serve any other gods. Therefore the king made
a new law that nobody in the kingdom of any nation should speak anything against the god of Shadrech, Meshach and Abednego or else there would be great punishment for anyone to do so. He them promoted the 3 friends again further in the kingdom of Babylon.

NOTE: KING NEBUCHADNEZZAR

1. RULED BY FEAR AND FORCING THOSE IN HIS KINGDOM TO DO AS HE WISHED.
2. He could threaten the people with death and destruction of their houses, when they did not carry out his command.
3. When he was pleased with them He would give them great positions and gave them many gifts.
